By Rita Rubin, USA TODAY

"The country's main professional group of obstetricians published "less restrictive" guidelines Wednesday that could lead to more vaginal births after C-sections, or VBACs.
"What the guidelines emphasize is that a trial of labor is a reasonable and appropriate alternative for many women with a prior cesarean delivery," says Jeffrey Ecker, a Harvard associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology who co-wrote the new guidelines from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. That includes women with two previous C-sections and those carrying twins.

Ecker's comment echo those of a National Institutes of Health consensus conference panel, which in March called on organizations such as his to make it easier for women to try for VBACs."

Since the health care initiative was passed, (and I supported it and still do) I have seen so many more articles similar to this one appearing. It is alarming to me as a woman. The medical (hospital) and insurance people, I fear, are trying to cut their losses. I believe this should be something to keep up with.

There are two facets in discussing this new medical opinion. On the one hand, this effort could spare some new mothers a major surgery to live with immediately as she becomes a new mother. It is a time of major stress and an overburdening sensory load to begin with.

The other is this: Often when the trial labor is allowed, many, many doctors, OB nurses and other professionals are so committed to it they allow a failing attempt to "continue" so long the life threatening spectre of hideously elevated blood pressure nearly takes the mother.
